What does success mean to you? For some, it's a corner office and a six-figure salary. For others, it's finally finishing that novel, launching a business, or mastering a new skill. I've worked with hundreds of clients over the years, and I've learned that success is deeply personal. But the energetic principles behind it? Those are universal.
In the Norse tradition, success wasn't just about winning battles—it was about living with honor, achieving your goals, and enjoying the fruits of your labor. The runes give us a complete toolkit for this journey.
In this guide, we'll explore the key runes for success, how to combine them into powerful bindrunes, and the practical steps you need to take to make it all work. By the end, you'll have a personalized success system that you can use for the rest of your life.

The success trinity: three energies you need
Through my years of practice, I've identified three essential energies for success. You need all three to create lasting achievement.
Victory energy (Sowilo): The power to overcome obstacles and win Discipline energy (Tiwaz): The focus to stay on track and do the hard work Communication energy (Ansuz): The clarity to express your ideas and connect with others
Let's explore each one in depth.

Sowilo (ᛋ): the victory rune
Sowilo, also spelled Sowelu or Sigel, is the rune of the sun . Its shape represents a lightning bolt or a ray of life-giving light. This is one of my favorite runes to use when the odds are stacked against me.
Core meanings of Sowilo:
Victory: Success in any contest, competition, or struggle
Power: Personal willpower and the energy to keep going
Wholeness: Just as the sun gives life, Sowilo brings vitality to your endeavors
Guidance: Illuminating your path when you're lost in the dark
When you invoke Sowilo, you're calling on the unstoppable power of the sun. It doesn't negotiate. It doesn't hesitate. It simply rises and shines.
How to work with Sowilo:
The Sunrise Ritual: Sowilo's power is strongest at dawn. Wake early, find a spot where you can see the sunrise. Face east and draw Sowilo in the air with your finger. As the sun crests the horizon, chant: "Sowilo, Sun of glory, light my way to victory. Burn away all obstacles and lead me to success."
On Your Devices: Draw a small Sowilo on a sticky note and put it on your laptop, or use a permanent marker on the back of your phone case. This charges your work tools with success energy.
Before High-Stakes Events: Visualize Sowilo glowing in your solar plexus, sending rays of golden light out through your words and actions. This projects confidence and authority.

Tiwaz (ᛏ): the rune of discipline and honor
Tiwaz is named for Tyr, the Norse god of justice and war. But Tyr wasn't just a battle god—he was the god of oaths, contracts, and the rule of law. The myth of Tyr sacrificing his hand to bind the wolf Fenrir captures the essence of this rune: the strength to sacrifice for the greater good, and the discipline to keep your word, no matter the cost.
Core meanings of Tiwaz:
Discipline: Unwavering focus and self-control
Justice: Fairness, honor, and doing the right thing
Sacrifice: Giving something up for a higher purpose
Mental fortitude: The inner strength to face challenges
Tiwaz is the rune for leaders, lawyers, and anyone who needs to make tough decisions.
How to work with Tiwaz:
The Decision-Making Ritual: When facing a difficult choice, especially one with moral weight, sit with Tiwaz. Draw the rune on paper, light a candle, and gaze at it. Ask yourself: "What is the most honorable choice? What aligns with my highest self?" Tiwaz cuts through confusion and points toward integrity.
For Focus and Discipline: Draw Tiwaz on a sticky note and place it on your workspace. Let it remind you of your goal, piercing through distractions like a spear until your task is complete.

Ansuz (ᚨ): the rune of communication
Ansuz is the rune of Odin himself—the god of wisdom, poetry, and magic. It represents communication, inspiration, and the power of the spoken word. In our modern world, success often depends on how well we communicate: interviews, presentations, negotiations, networking.
Core meanings of Ansuz:
Communication: Clear expression and effective speech
Wisdom: Accessing higher knowledge
Inspiration: Receiving creative ideas
Connection: Building relationships through words
How to work with Ansuz:
Before Important Conversations: Draw Ansuz on your forearm or a piece of paper you keep in your pocket. Visualize it opening your throat chakra, allowing your words to flow clearly and persuasively.
For Learning and Study: Place an Ansuz talisman on your study materials. This rune helps absorb information and recall it when needed.
Success bindrunes: combining the energies
Now let's put these energies together. Here are the most effective combinations I've found.

The complete success bindrune: Sowilo + Tiwaz + Ansuz
This is my personal success formula—the trifecta of victory, discipline, and communication.
Sowilo provides the winning energy
Tiwaz adds the discipline to stay focused
Ansuz ensures clear communication of your ideas
Create this bindrune when you're starting a major project, going for a promotion, or launching a business. Keep it on your altar or workspace.

The career advancement bindrune: Fehu + Sowilo + Raidho
For those seeking promotion or new job opportunities:
This combination is excellent for job interviews. Draw it on a piece of paper and hold it in your palm during the interview (discreetly).

The business success bindrune: Ansuz + Gebo + Wunjo
For entrepreneurs and business owners:
This bindrune creates what I call "joyful prosperity"—business that feels good while being profitable.

The competition winner: Tiwaz + Sowilo + Uruz
For when you need to win—sports, contests, competitive bids:
Advanced success formulas
Beyond bindrunes, there are traditional runescripts for success.
AUJA (Ansuz + Uruz + Jera + Ansuz): This formula attracts good luck and happiness to its owner. The double Ansuz at beginning and end amplifies the communication of your intention to the universe.
SIGUR I STRIDI: This isn't a runescript but a Norse phrase meaning "victory in war". You can create a bindrune from the initials (S, I, S) or use the individual runes: Sowilo, Isa, Sowilo.
LAPU (Laguz + Ansuz + Perth + Uruz): This ancient word means "invitation" or "calling" . It's perfect for calling in opportunities, clients, or the perfect job.
The success ritual: a step-by-step guide
Here's a complete ritual I do with clients who are serious about achieving a major goal.
Step 1: Preparation
Choose a time when you won't be disturbed. Cleanse your space with sage or incense. Gather your materials: paper, red pen or paint, a yellow or gold candle (for Sowilo), and a blue candle (for Tiwaz/Ansuz).
Step 2: Grounding
Sit comfortably and take several deep breaths. Feel yourself connected to the earth below and the sky above.
Step 3: Write your goal
On the paper, write your goal in the present tense, as if already accomplished. For example: "I am the successful owner of a thriving marketing agency serving ideal clients."
Step 4: Draw your bindrune
Based on your specific goal, choose one of the bindrunes above or create your own. Draw it above your written goal. As you draw each rune, chant its name and feel its energy.
Step 5: Candle activation
Light both candles. Hold the paper in your hands and visualize your goal as already accomplished. See it, feel it, taste it. Let the feeling of success wash over you.
Step 6: Seal it
Fold the paper toward you (bringing the energy to you) and place it under the yellow candle. Let the candles burn safely for at least 15 minutes while you meditate on your success.
Step 7: Take action
Within 24 hours, take one inspired action toward your goal. The universe responds to movement.
The shadow side of success runes
I have to be honest about something important. Success magic can reveal your shadows. If you have unhealed beliefs about not deserving success, the runes will bring those to the surface. This isn't a bad thing—it's an opportunity to heal.
If you find yourself procrastinating or self-sabotaging after working with success runes, don't give up. Work with the rune Nauthiz (need) to understand what's really blocking you. Sometimes our deepest needs aren't for success but for safety, love, or belonging.
Frequently asked questions about runes for success
Which rune is best for passing exams?
Ansuz is your primary rune for learning and communication. Combine it with Sowilo for victory. Before studying, meditate on Ansuz to open your mind. Before the test, visualize Sowilo to recall information clearly.
Can runes help me start a business?
Absolutely. Use Fehu for wealth attraction, Sowilo for victory, and Raidho for the journey ahead. I also recommend Gebo for creating beneficial exchanges with customers.
What if I've tried everything and nothing works?
This is when you need Nauthiz. This rune represents need and constraint—it helps you understand what's truly blocking you. Sometimes the greatest success comes from addressing our deepest needs first.
How do I know if my success spell is working?
You'll start seeing "coincidences" or opportunities aligned with your goal. You might meet the right person, hear about an opening, or have a sudden creative insight. Pay attention and take action on these nudges.
Can I use success runes for someone else?
Yes, but only with their permission. It's unethical to influence someone's path without consent. If they agree, you can create a talisman for them or include them in your visualizations.
Success is a journey, not a destination. The runes are your companions on this path, offering wisdom, power, and alignment. But remember—they work best when you do.
