8 min read

This free yes or no rune reading draws one Elder Futhark rune and gives you an answer of Yes, No, Not yet or Unclear, along with the reason behind it. Hold a clear question in mind, draw once, and read both the answer and the explanation.

How to ask

A yes or no question has to be answerable with yes or no. "Should I apply for this job this month?" works; "What should I do about work?" does not. Keep it to one subject and one time frame, and avoid negatives such as "Shouldn't I…?", which make the answer confusing to interpret. A single, simple question is best, because a question with two parts gets an answer you can't interpret.

Ask about your own actions where you can. "Is it a good idea for me to call her this week?" is a question you can act on, while "Will she call me?" puts the outcome in someone else's hands. Draw only once per question, and don't redraw because you disliked the answer. Wait until the situation changes, or at least until the next day, before you ask the same thing again.

Here are a few examples of well-formed questions:

  • Is now a good time for me to start this project?

  • Should I accept this offer as it stands?

  • Will taking this trip in spring work out well for me?

  • Is it wise to lend this money?

An honest note: runes are a tool for reflection, not fate. A yes or no rune does not decide the future; it gives you a symbol that often brings your own hesitations or confidence to the surface. In my practice, the reason behind the answer is more useful than the single word. If you're new to runes, start with what runes are and how to draw runes.

What each rune means in a yes or no reading

Below is the answer each rune gives, upright and reversed, with the reasoning. These yes/no readings are modern practice, built on the traditional names and themes of each rune. Nine runes are symmetrical, which means they look the same either way up, so they have no reversed position and keep the same answer whichever way they fall.

If you want the full traditional background of any rune, follow its name to its own page. The answers below are deliberately short, so the reason matters as much as the verdict.

Fehu (ᚠ) — Yes. Fehu is the rune of wealth that moves, so the answer leans toward yes, especially where effort or resources are involved. What you ask about can bring a real gain if you manage it well. Reversed, the answer is No: Something is being lost or wasted, and pushing ahead now would cost more than it returns.

Uruz (ᚢ) — Yes. Uruz brings raw strength and stamina, so yes, you have the energy to make this happen. Expect it to take effort rather than arrive on its own. Reversed, the answer is Not yet: Your strength is low or misdirected right now; recover first, then ask again.

Thurisaz (ᚦ) — Not yet. Thurisaz is a thorn and a gate: there is an obstacle or a decision to face before you can go through. Deal with the friction first and the way opens. Reversed, the answer is No: Acting now would be reckless or would provoke conflict you don't need.

Ansuz (ᚨ) — Yes. Ansuz is the rune of words and good counsel, so the answer is yes, especially if the question involves a conversation, a message or advice. Listen carefully to what you hear next. Reversed, the answer is Unclear: The message is muddled or someone isn't being fully honest, so get clear information before you rely on any answer.

Raido (ᚱ) — Yes. Raido is a journey in good order, so yes, this can move forward, especially travel, a move or a plan with steps. Keep to a steady pace. Reversed, the answer is No: The timing or the route is wrong, and forcing the trip now leads to delays.

Kenaz (ᚲ) — Yes. Kenaz is a torch: you see the situation clearly and the answer is yes. Your knowledge or skill is what makes it work. Reversed, the answer is No: Something has lost its spark, or you are missing an important piece of understanding.

Gebo (ᚷ) — Yes. Gebo is the gift and the fair exchange, so the answer is yes, as long as there is give and take on both sides. Partnerships, offers and agreements are favoured. Gebo has no reversed position.

Wunjo (ᚹ) — Yes. Wunjo is joy and things going right, one of the clearest yes runes. The outcome is likely to bring you satisfaction. Reversed, the answer is No: This choice is unlikely to bring the happiness you expect, so look at what you actually want from it.

Hagalaz (ᚺ) — No. Hagalaz is hail, a sudden disruption outside your control. For now the answer is no, and the storm needs to pass before you try again. Hagalaz has no reversed position.

Nauthiz (ᚾ) — Not yet. Nauthiz is need and constraint, so the answer is not yet. Something must be worked through or a lack filled before this can happen. Nauthiz has no reversed position.

Isa (ᛁ) — No. Isa is ice: nothing moves. For the moment the answer is no, and pushing will not melt it faster; wait and ask again when things shift. Isa has no reversed position.

Jera (ᛃ) — Yes. Jera is the harvest arriving in its season, so the answer is yes, though it may take time. Steady work brings the result you hope for. Jera has no reversed position.

Eihwaz (ᛇ) — Yes. Eihwaz is the enduring yew, so yes, provided you are ready to persist through a difficult stretch. The answer rewards patience and resilience. Eihwaz has no reversed position.

Perthro (ᛈ) — Unclear. Perthro is the rune of chance and things still hidden, so the answer is not fixed yet. The outcome depends on factors you can't see, and you may want to ask a more specific question. Reversed, the answer is No: There is something hidden that works against you, so don't gamble on this.

Algiz (ᛉ) — Yes. Algiz is protection, so the answer is yes, and you are well guarded as you go ahead. Trust your instincts about whom to involve. Reversed, the answer is No: Your instincts are warning you, and moving forward now leaves you exposed.

Sowilo (ᛊ) — Yes. Sowilo is the sun, the strongest yes in the Futhark. Success, clarity and confidence are on your side. Sowilo has no reversed position.

Tiwaz (ᛏ) — Yes. Tiwaz is courage and justice, so the answer is yes, if your cause is fair and you are willing to commit fully. Act with integrity. Reversed, the answer is No: The fight isn't worth it, or your motives need a second look.

Berkana (ᛒ) — Yes. Berkana is growth and a new beginning, so yes, this can grow if you nurture it. Small steady care works better than big leaps. Reversed, the answer is Not yet: The idea isn't ready to grow; it needs more care and preparation first.

Ehwaz (ᛖ) — Yes. Ehwaz is the horse and its rider moving together, so the answer is yes, especially with a trusted partner. Progress comes through cooperation. Reversed, the answer is No: There is mistrust or bad timing, and you are not moving together with the people involved.

Mannaz (ᛗ) — Unclear. Mannaz is the self and other people, so the answer depends mostly on your choices and how you work with others. Rephrase the question around what you can do. Reversed, the answer is No: Self-deception or other people's influence is clouding the matter, and going ahead now is unwise.

Laguz (ᛚ) — Unclear. Laguz is water and intuition, so the rune turns the question back to your gut feeling. Go with the flow of what feels right rather than a strict yes or no. Reversed, the answer is No: You are being swept along by emotion or confusion, so wait until the water settles.

Ingwaz (ᛜ) — Yes. Ingwaz is a seed that completes its growth, so the answer is yes. A matter that has been developing quietly is ready to come to completion. Ingwaz has no reversed position.

Othala (ᛟ) — Yes. Othala is home and inheritance, so yes, especially for questions about family, property or long-term roots. What you build now lasts. Reversed, the answer is No: Old patterns or family matters stand in the way, and this choice may cost you a sense of belonging.

Dagaz (ᛞ) — Yes. Dagaz is daybreak, a clear yes and a turning point. Expect a breakthrough or a sudden change for the better. Dagaz has no reversed position.

How to read your result

Read the single word first, then the reason. The reason tells you why the answer is what it is, and that usually matters more: a "Yes" from Uruz means you'll need to work for it, while a "Yes" from Sowilo means the road is clear. A "No" from Isa means "not while things are frozen", which is very different from a "No" from reversed Fehu, which warns of a loss.

"Not yet" is a timing answer. It tells you the matter isn't closed, but something must change first, so look at what the rune points to and work on that. "Unclear" means the question itself may be too broad, depends on other people, or hinges on information you don't have. Rephrase it more narrowly, wait a day, and ask again. Sometimes "Unclear" simply means the decision is still genuinely open and yours to make.

Notice your reaction too. If you feel relief at a "No", or disappointment at a "Yes", that feeling is part of the answer, and it may tell you more than the rune itself about what you really want. For a fuller picture than one rune can give, try the three-rune reading for the future or look up the full rune meanings.

FAQ

Which runes mean yes?

In this reading, the clearest yes runes are Sowilo, Wunjo, Dagaz and Gebo, with many others giving a conditional yes. Fehu, Raido, Kenaz, Tiwaz and Jera say yes with conditions such as effort, good timing or fairness. Always read the reason, because most yes answers come with something you need to do.

Hagalaz and Isa give a "No" for now, as do most runes in the reversed position. Thurisaz and Nauthiz upright say "Not yet", which means there is an obstacle or need to deal with first. A "No" from a rune is rarely final; it describes the present situation.

Nine Elder Futhark runes, including Gebo, Isa, Jera and Sowilo, are symmetrical: they look identical upside down. Since you can't tell which way they fell, they have only one meaning and one answer. Some readers do not use reversals at all, which is also a valid approach.

Yes, it helps. Write down the question, the rune and the answer, then look back after a week or a month to see how the situation developed and how the rune's reasoning fits. Over time this record teaches you more about each rune than any list of meanings.

No reading can promise accuracy, and I don't present runes as a prediction machine. What a single rune does well is cut through overthinking and show you how you really feel about the choice. Treat the answer as a well-reasoned second opinion that you weigh alongside facts and common sense.

You can use it to reflect, but not to replace professional advice. For medical, legal or financial decisions, talk to a qualified specialist; runes complement real-world help, they don't replace it.
