How to ask
A three-rune spread works best with a clear situation in mind: a relationship, a job, a move, a project. Ask something like "How is my situation at work developing?" or "Where is this project heading?" rather than "What will happen to me?", which is too wide for three runes to answer well.
Set a time frame if you can, such as the next three months. The "Coming" rune then speaks to that period, which makes it easier to check later how the reading played out. Draw once and don't reshuffle if you dislike a rune; the uncomfortable runes often carry the most useful message.
A few questions that suit this spread:
How is my relationship with this person developing?
Where is my career heading over the next few months?
What should I understand about this move before I commit?
How will this project unfold if I keep my current course?
An honest note: runes are a tool for reflection, not fate. The "Coming" rune shows the direction things are moving now, not a fixed destiny, and in my practice it is most useful as a prompt to act. If you change your choices, the outcome can change too. For the basics, see what runes are and how to draw runes.

What each rune means in a future reading
The three-position spread is a modern divination layout; the meanings below are modern practice, built on the traditional rune names and themes. Each rune is described in all three positions, first upright, then reversed. Nine runes are symmetrical, so they look the same either way up and have no reversed position. For more layouts, see rune spreads.
Fehu (ᚠ). Upright — past: you built up resources, income or goodwill that still supports you; present: you have something valuable in hand, and how you use it matters now; coming: gain and new resources are on the way if you keep them moving. Reversed — past: a past loss or waste still shapes how you handle what you have; present: resources are leaking, so check where your energy and money go; coming: a risk of loss ahead, so protect what you have.
Uruz (ᚢ). Upright — past: a period of strength or a hard challenge made you tougher; present: you have the energy and stamina to take this on; coming: a surge of vitality and the strength to start something demanding. Reversed — past: exhaustion or a time when you felt powerless still lingers; present: your energy is low or pushed in the wrong direction; coming: you will need rest before you can push forward.
Thurisaz (ᚦ). Upright — past: you faced an obstacle or conflict that set the course; present: a threshold is in front of you, and it needs a deliberate decision; coming: a challenge is coming that you can pass through if you prepare. Reversed — past: an old conflict or rash act still has consequences; present: you are reacting too quickly or defensively; coming: avoid a confrontation that would cost more than it gains.
Ansuz (ᚨ). Upright — past: advice, a teacher or an important conversation shaped where you are; present: listen closely, because a message or insight is here for you; coming: news, learning or good counsel will open the way. Reversed — past: misunderstandings or bad advice led you here; present: signals are mixed, so ask before you assume; coming: watch for misleading information and get facts in writing.
Raido (ᚱ). Upright — past: a journey or a move set things in motion; present: you are on the road, and a clear plan keeps you on course; coming: travel, a move or steady progress toward your goal. Reversed — past: a trip or plan went wrong and still affects you; present: you feel out of step or unsure of the direction; coming: delays ahead, so rethink the route before you set off.
Kenaz (ᚲ). Upright — past: a spark of insight or a skill you learned lit the way; present: you see clearly now, and your creativity is your strength; coming: new understanding or a creative breakthrough is on the way. Reversed — past: something that once inspired you has burned out; present: you are missing a piece of understanding, or the spark has dimmed; coming: guard against losing interest or acting without enough knowledge.
Gebo (ᚷ). Past: a gift, partnership or fair exchange brought you to this point; present: balance in giving and receiving is the key right now; coming: an offer, agreement or partnership is on its way. Gebo has no reversed position.
Wunjo (ᚹ). Upright — past: a happy, harmonious time gave you something to build on; present: you are in a good place, and joy is available if you let it in; coming: satisfaction, harmony and a goal reached. Reversed — past: disappointment or a period of unhappiness still colours things; present: you are waiting for someone else to make you happy; coming: expect some frustration unless you adjust your expectations.

Isa (ᛁ). Past: a standstill or a frozen situation held you back; present: things are on pause, and stillness is wiser than force; coming: a pause is coming, so use it to plan rather than push. Isa has no reversed position.
Jera (ᛃ). Past: patient effort laid the foundation you stand on; present: your work is ripening, so keep steady; coming: a harvest: results arrive in their proper season. Jera has no reversed position.
Eihwaz (ᛇ). Past: you endured a difficult stretch and grew stronger roots; present: persistence and a long view will carry you through; coming: a test of endurance that you can pass, leading to lasting change. Eihwaz has no reversed position.

Berkana (ᛒ). Upright — past: a new beginning or caring support helped you grow; present: something new is growing and needs gentle care; coming: growth, renewal and a fresh start. Reversed — past: neglect, or care that smothered, held you back; present: growth is stalled because you are spread too thin; coming: slow progress unless you focus on one thing.
Ehwaz (ᛖ). Upright — past: a partnership or trusted ally carried you forward; present: teamwork and trust bring steady progress; coming: movement, a positive change or a helpful partner. Reversed — past: a mismatched partnership or broken trust; present: you and others are pulling in different directions; coming: restlessness ahead, so check before you change course.

Dagaz (ᛞ). Past: a turning point opened a new chapter; present: clarity is breaking through, like dawn; coming: a breakthrough and a completely new outlook. Dagaz has no reversed position.
How to read your result
Read the three runes as one story rather than three separate answers. The Past rune shows what set the situation in motion, the Present rune shows what is active now, and the Coming rune shows where things are heading if nothing changes. Look for the link between them: a Past of Isa, a Present of Kenaz and a Coming of Dagaz, for example, reads as a thaw turning into clarity and then a breakthrough.
Pay attention to the balance of the spread. Several reversed runes suggest that energy is blocked and needs attention, while several symmetrical or strongly positive runes suggest things are moving in a clear direction. If the same theme shows up twice, such as two runes about partnership, that theme is the heart of the reading. The guide to rune combinations explains how pairs of runes modify each other.
If the Coming rune is difficult, look back at the Present rune for the lever you can pull. The reading describes a trend, and the present is where you can change it. Write the spread down and check it again at the end of your time frame; this is the best way to learn how runes speak to you.

FAQ
What does a three-rune reading show?
A three-rune reading shows the development of one situation: what led to it, what is happening now and where it is heading. It is one of the simplest and most popular spreads in modern rune divination. It gives more context than a single rune while staying easy to interpret.
Can runes predict the future?
Runes show tendencies, not certainties. The Coming rune reflects the direction things are moving based on the present, and your choices can change it. Practitioners use it as guidance for reflection, not as a fixed prophecy.
What if all three runes are reversed?
Several reversed runes suggest that the situation is blocked or that you are working against yourself somewhere. It is a call to look closely at the Present rune and find what needs to change. It is not a sign of bad luck.
What if I draw the same rune I drew before?
Repeated runes usually point to a theme that has not been resolved yet. Read the meaning again and ask what you haven't acted on. The article on repeating runes covers this in detail.
How far ahead does the "Coming" rune look?
As far as your question sets it. If you ask about the next month, the rune speaks to that month; if you set no time frame, it usually reflects the near future of a few weeks to a few months. Setting a time frame makes the reading easier to check.
Can I use this spread for health or money questions?
You can use it to reflect, but it is no substitute for a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser. Runes complement real-world help; they don't replace it. For money-focused questions, the single-rune rune reading for money may be more direct.
